Lot Essay

Together with work for the Paris Opéra, Gillot produced costume designs for the theaters of the Comédie française and the Comédie italienne (the French version of the Italian Commedia dell’Arte), a troupe that had been expelled from France in 1697, but which continued to exert a fascination with audiences. The figures on this sheet are characters of the Commedia dell’Arte.
