HUNTER S. THOMPSON'S COPY OF The Dharma Bums
KEROUAC, JEAN-LOUIS LEBRIS DE ("JACK") (1922-1969)
New York: The Viking Press, 1958.

First edition, with dust-jacket; Hunter S. Thompson's copy, with his annotations. Gifted to Jim Irsay by Thompson's widow, Anita.

The Dharma Bums, Kerouac’s story of the search for spiritual renewal from nature, was conceived as a sequel to On the Road (1957). Thompson's annotations to this copy, in various colors of ink and pencil, reveal his particular appreciation of Kerouac's literary craft. On p. 170, Thompson has circled the word "Now", and on the upper pastedown provided an annotated concordance: "use of 'now' in past tense—very effective, immediate." Thompson elsewhere comments on the length of Kerouac's sentences, and on p. 11 tries to fill in names for the Beat-Generation inspirations behind Kerouac's fictional poets (his reproduced here in parenthesis): "The other poets were either hornrimmed intellectual hepcats with wild black hair like Alvah Goldbook ('Ginsberg') [...] or bow-tied wild-haired old anarchist fuds like Rheinhold Cocoethes ('Rexroth')". A large section of p. 11 he labels "Bulls**t". The copy was presented by Thompson's widow Anita Thompson to Jim Irsay—her letter to Irsay is included with the copy.

Octavo (202 × 134mm). Original publisher's black cloth, lettered on upper cover in green and on spine in blue, green and silver (few light marks on covers); pictorial dust-jacket, not price-clipped (rubbed, repairs, few small stains); custom box.
