Lot Essay

This Gibson Hummingbird guitar was loaned to Bob Dylan by Gibson for Bill Clinton's Inauguration Concert at the Lincoln Memorial. Dylan performed his song 'Chimes of Freedom', with a backing band led by Quincy Jones. It was an especially poignant moment, given that Dylan had performed in the very same spot thirty years earlier during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in August 1963, when Martin Luther King Jr. gave his iconic 'I Have A Dream' speech. Following the Inauguration Concert, the guitar was returned to Gibson. Gibson subsequently removed the pickup, volume and control knobs that had been installed for the concert and repaired the holes to the body.
