Lot Essay
Steel torch as originally utilized during the relay route for the 1936 Olympic Games hosted in Berlin, Germany. Body of the torch displays engraved rendering of the relay course, the Olympic insignia, and the inscription, "Fackel- Staffel, Lauf, Olympia-Berlin, 1936. The top of the torch is inscribed, "Organisations-Komitee fur die XI. Olympiade Berlin 1936, Als Dank Dem Trager." The bottom of the torch platform is inscribed, "Stiftung Der Fried Krupp A. G. Essen, Krupp Nirosta V2A Stahl". General surface wear including some scratching is evident while presenting in fine overall condition. The 1936 Olympic relay initiated and now time honored tradition that led the trademark flame from Olympia, Greece to its final destination of Berlin, Germany. Over 3,000 torches were made for over 3,000 individual torch bearers who traversed the imposing route from Greece to Germany. The 1936 Olympic games remain one of the most significant in history for numerous points perhaps none of more importance than Jesse Owens resounding victories in the presence of German Chancellor Adolf Hitler during a seminal point in world tensions.
