Lot Essay
"The most significant fusion in Haring’s work may have been his ability to encompass a diverse range of cultural, intellectual, and artistic trends within his own vision. In a single painting, Haring could invoke break-dancing and a hip-hop beat from the Bronx, the fluidity and sexuality of the Paradise Garage dance floor, and a Lower East Side street sensibility, all within a rigorous semiotic structure. Perhaps more than that of any other artist, Haring’s work embodies the mixture of underground sub-cultures in ‘80s New York” (J. Deitch, Keith Haring, New York, 2008, pp. 18-19).
