Historiquement, les crochets de suspension connus sous le nom de samban, et plus particulièrement ceux représentant les waken, c’est-à-dire les entités surnaturelles les plus puissantes de la cosmologie iatmul, étaient considérés comme des objets sacrés permettant de se rapprocher de ces êtres. Avant les raids ou les expéditions de chasse, les hommes se rassemblaient dans la maison cérémonielle pour consulter les waken incarnés dans le crochet. Si les exemplaires les plus puissants étaient réservés aux grands rituels, des crochets domestiques plus ordinaires pouvaient également servir à communiquer avec les esprits pour des préoccupations du quotidien.
Ce crochet appartient à un type plutôt classique, se distinguant par un subtil sentiment de dynamisme créé grâce à sa légère rotation. Il présente un visage peint orné des motifs caractéristiques iatmul. En détail raffiné et distinctif, la section inférieure est enrichie d’un visage sculpté en relief et orienté à l’envers, harmonieusement équilibré par rapport à la tête située au sommet.

Prior to raids or hunting journeys, men assembled in the ceremonial house to consult the waken embodied in the hook. While the most potent examples were reserved for major ritual purposes, more ordinary household hooks could also be used to communicate with spirits in relation to everyday concerns.
The present example belongs to a rather classic type, distinguished by a subtly heightened sense of dynamism created through its light rotation.
