Lot Essay

A pair of gilt-decorated zitan armchairs with comparable openwork design on the back and sides, and dated to the Yongzheng-Qianlong period, is illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Furniture of the Ming and Qing Dynasties (54), Hong Kong, 2002, p. 44, pl. 34. Another black lacquer armchair decorated with landscape scenes in gold was included in the International Exhibition of Chinese Art 1935-6, London, 1935-6, no. 2513.
