Lot Essay

Compare the 16th-century red lacquer octagonal box and cover of very similar form and size sold at Sotheby’s London, 13 May 2015, lot 117. Like the current box, that example is carved on top of the cover with a scene of immortals and each of the faceted sides is carved with a different figural scene.
