Lot Essay

Tibetan altar cabinets, such as the present lot, are used as a storage cabinet for offerings, books, and religious objects. They are typically constructed of wood and painted with Buddhist themes and designs. This cabinet shows two swirling jewels at center, flanked on either side with floral vases. Below, two snow lions raise their arms aside a mongoose reveling over his pile of jewels. Two examples of this style of cabinet sold at Bonhams, Paris, 10-16 December 2022, lot 595 and another at Christie's, Amsterdam, 16 December 2008, lot 520.
