ATTRIBUTED TO LUDOVICO CARACCI, MARY MAGDALENE SITTING IN A ROOM, COMBING HER HAIR, PEN AND BROWN INK
The drawing was first published by Bodmer in 1939. Stylistically, its refined pen work and parallel hatching recall a sheet by Ludovico Carracci in the British Museum depicting the Virgin and Child with Putti (inv. 1895,0915.686; B. Bohn, Ludovico Carracci and the Art of Drawing, Turnhout, 2004, no. 232, ill.). A small oil on copper by the artist with a closely related composition was offered for sale at Christie's, London, 5 July 2019 (lot 183).
The graphic style also recalls the drawings of the bolognese artist Giovanni Luigi Valesio (1579-1633), whose drawings are often compared with Ludovico’s, his master (see B. Bohn, ‘I Disegni di Giovanni Luigi Valesio’, Grafica d'arte 29 (1997), 29-35).

Lot Essay

Le dessin fut publié pour la première fois par Bodmer en 1939. Par son exécution délicate à la plume et son réseau de hachures parallèles, l’œuvre rappelle une feuille de Ludovico Carracci conservée au British Museum, représentant la Vierge à l’Enfant entourée de putti (inv. 1895,0915.686 ; B. Bohn, Ludovico Carracci and the Art of Drawing, Turnhout, 2004, n° 232, ill). Un petit tableau à l’huile sur cuivre par l’artiste, présentant une composition étroitement apparentée, fut proposé à la vente chez Christie’s, Londres, le 5 juillet 2019 (lot 183).
Le style graphique rappelle également les dessins de l'artiste bolognais Giovanni Luigi Valesio (1579-1633), souvent misen parallèle avec ceux de Ludovico, son maître (voir B. Bohn, ‘I Disegni di Giovanni Luigi Valesio’, Grafica d’arte 29 (1997), pp. 29‑35).
