A native of Hamburg, Jacob Weyer was above all a painter of battle scenes. The present drawing belongs to a coherent series, most sheets of which are numbered, of which three examples are preserved in the Princeton University Art Museum (inv. x1953‑13, x1953‑12, x1944‑301). Three further sheets have appeared at auction, sometimes bearing an earlier attribution to Pierre Reymond (Limoges 1513–1594): at Christie’s London (2 July 1991, lot 196), Christie’s New York (3 January 1998, lot 390), and Christie’s Paris (18 May 2022, lot 36). Two additional sheets were sold at Sotheby’s (Amsterdam, 8 November 2000, lots 1 and 2; see also T. Trümper, Der Hamburger Maler und Zeichner Jacob Weyer (1623–1670), Petersberg, 2012, p. 139, nos. ZD 31–33, pls. 70–71).
The small figures sketched on some sheets near the upper centre, shaped in a manner suggestive of letters, may allude to an abecedarium.

Originaire d'Hambourg, Weyer était avant tout un peintre de bataille. Ce dessin appartient à une série, la plupart sont numérotés, dont trois sont conservés à Princeton University Art Museum (inv. x1953-13, x1953-12, x1944-301). Trois autres sont passés en vente aux enchères, parfois avec une ancienne attribution à Pierre Reymond (Limoges 1513-1594) chez Christie's: à Londres (2 juillet 1991, lot 196), à New York (3 janvier 1998, lot 390) et à Paris (18 mai 2022, lot 36); puis deux chez Sotheby's (Amsterdam, 8 novembre 2000, lots 1, 2; voir aussi T. Trümper, Des Hamburger Maler und Zeichner Jacob Weyer (1623-1670), Petersberg, 2012, p. 139, n° ZD 31-33, pl. 70-71).
