A SET OF LACQUER STATIONERY BOX (RYOSHIBAKO) AND WRITING BOX (SUZURIBAKO) OF PHOENIX AND HOLLYHOCK

Writing box: 9 ¾ x 7 3⁄8 x 1 5⁄8 in. (24.8 x 18.7 x 4.1 cm.)
Stationary box: 15 ¾ x 12 3⁄8 x 4 ¾ in. (40 x 31.4 x 12.1 cm.)
Each with a wood box, on one lid signed Heian Yokodo sei, sealed Kyoto Takatsujisakaimachi and Yokodo sei, and described the origin of the piece: in autumn 1915, the Emperor had his ceremonies of the accession to the throne, for which he ordered his train to be decorated in makie; the remaining lacquer and mother-of-pearl were used to make this set, in longlasting commenmoration of this event
