Lot Essay
The present work was illustrated on the cover of the December 13, 1947 issue of The Saturday Evening Post, accompanied by the following explanation: "What have you here, besides an adroit small-town scene by Stevan Dohanos, is a little sermon on mailing Christmas packages early. The locale is Georgetown, Connecticut, about eight miles from Dohanos' home in Westport, and the characters are Postmaster Julius Johnson, about to receive a shipment of Christmas packages, and Levi Squires, who owns the truck, the dog and the cow—that cow was one of the most co-operative models Dohanos has had in a long time. If you take this reminder to heart, the Post Office Department will call you blessed. Don't be like Dohanos himself. New Year's Day never rolls around without finding a stern note on Dohanos' desk, written to himself in early October, reading 'Draw your Christmas cards now.'"
