NOTE:
In 1885, at the age of twenty-one, Huang Binhong traveled from his hometown in Shexian to Yangzhou via Anqing. While passing Xinling near the Wang Gong Temple, he reflected on his former residence and painted Crossing Xinling, accompanied by a poem. In 1925, Huang revisited and inscribed this forty-year-old work (see Binhong Shicao, vol. 1, p. 23). Based on this inscription, Wang Jiwen dated the painting to 1884, though Wang Zhongxiu argued the date was not definitive due to Huang’s habit of rounding years (see Chronicle, p. 17). The 1983 publication Landscape Paintings by Huang Binhong later titled the work In the Cloudy Mountains.
