Lot Essay

This stunning example of Patek Philippe rare handicrafts is part of an extremely limited edition set of three white gold reference 5089G watches featuring locomotives from the golden age of steam on their cloisonné enamel dials. The present watch is offered in single sealed condition and accompanied by the full set of accessories.
Originally only available as part of the set of three watches when first offered to Patek Philippe's most important clients, this reference 5089G was released in 2016 with each watch of the set sporting a different steam locomotive cloisonné dial highlighted with either gold or silver leaf. The present watch affords collectors the perfect opportunity to obtain an individual piece from one of these exclusive and much sought after sets. It is thought that very few examples of the present reference 5089G-075 white gold Calatrava are likely to have been made, each cloisonné enamel dial being unique by its handmade nature as one of the superb creations of Patek Philippe’s rare handicrafts division. The present dial has been created using the technique of cloisonné enamel that also demonstrates the amazing tonal effects that can be achieved by the best enamellers.
Patek Philippe’s rare handicrafts division is dedicated to the preservation of the eclectic artisanal skills that have been associated with horology for over 400 years. The continuing use of these precious techniques in modern watchmaking contributes to their survival whilst at the same time delighting and impressing collectors and connoisseurs. The resplendent watch offered here pays tribute to Patek Philippe’s devotion to keeping these ancient crafts alive and demonstrates the mastery of techniques and subjects that enhance and enrich Patek Philippe’s enduring appeal and reputation for excellence in all aspects of watchmaking.
The wristwatches with rare handicrafts cloisonné enamel dials, always made in very small editions are now eagerly awaited as iconic and highly collectable horological works of art.
