Lot Essay

Patek Philippe reference 5039R-014 is arguably the most attractive and luxurious version of the 5039, known for its now iconic ‘Clous de Paris’ or ‘hobnail’ bezel. The brown sunburst dial, rose gold case and matching rose gold indexes combine to give the model an overall richness that is distinct from the standard version of the reference. Fully confirmed by the original Certificate of Origin, the present watch is, to the best of our knowledge, the only one with this specific configuration to appear at international auction. Interestingly, this watch was sold in 2023, at the Patek Philippe Salon in Geneva, this is significant because the series reference 5039 had been discontinued in 2007 after a ten year production period. This would suggest that the present watch was almost certainly made by special request as an ‘out of series’ piece with brown sunburst dial, its highly individual aesthetic places it as one of the most desirable individual watches of the entire reference.

The Patek Philippe reference 5039 perpetual calendar was the immediate successor to the reference 3940 and was powered by the legendary calibre 240Q automatic movement. The main distinguishing feature of the 5039 is its ‘Clous de Paris’ bezel and elongated lugs. In production from 1997 to 2007, 500 examples in yellow gold, 300 in pink gold, and 400 in white gold were made. The present watch was manufactured ‘out of series’ and sold long after the original reference had been discontinued, it is a true prize for the collector seeking the most exclusive variations of Patek Philippe classics.
