First launched in 2015 in red gold and platinum editions, the LM Perpetual represents a complete reinvention of that most traditional of horological complications. Beginning with a blank sheet of paper, MB&F and independent Irish watchmaker Stephen McDonnell developed a visually stunning in-house movement from the ground up to eliminate the drawbacks of conventional perpetual calendars.
The Legacy Machine Perpetual is available in three limited editions of 25 pieces each: platinum 950 with a blue back dial, 18k red gold with a grey back dial, and 18k white gold with a purple back dial – the present watch being the latter. Additionally, a non-limited edition is offered in 18k white gold with a grey back dial. Within this line-up, the purple dial white gold limited edition stands as one of the scarcest and most distinctive configurations, produced in only 25 examples worldwide.
If this were not exciting enough, the present watch features a mechanical processor system that turns traditional perpetual calendar architecture on its head. Whereas conventional mechanisms use a 31-day month as default and fast-forward through redundant dates, the LM Perpetual utilises a default 28-day month and adds extra days as required. Each month always has the exact number of days needed – there is no skipping or fast-forwarding.
