Lot Essay

The RM011 was released in 2007 having been developed in collaboration with Brazillian Formula One driver Felipe Massa. Featuring a flyback chronograph function that can reset without stopping and a 60-minute countdown function, it also features an annual calendar with months and oversize date.

The case requires 202 separate machining operations to finish to the required standard demanded by Richard Mille. The machine tooling process requires 8 days of adjusting the machines for the bezel, 5 days for the centre body and another 5 days for the case back. The watch houses a double barrel system and alpine screws for the bridge and case to improve torque stability. The design is based on the construction premise of Formula 1 racing cars whereby the chassis and engine have to work together in perfect harmony. The movement, the RMAC1 calibre is no ordinary automatic movement, it uses a variable geometry rotor to suit different lifestyles – this device optimises the winding of the mainspring by adapting it to the user’s activities to prevent overwinding.

Felipe Massa
The racing driver Felipe Massa (born in São Paulo on 25 April 1981) was racing in the Formula E Championship for the Venturi Team between 2019 and 2020. He started his career in Formula One in 2002 and until 2017 raced for different teams at the wheel. In 2006, he reached 3rd place and in 2008, 2nd place of the Formula One World Championship with Scuderia Ferrari S.p.A. Massa currently competes full-time in the Brazilian Stock Car Pro Series, driving the No. 19 Chevrolet Cruze for Lubrax Podium.
