Lot Essay
This stellar reference 3900P is the über-rare platinum version of the unusual and already very rare precision quartz mid-size Nautilus. Complete with solid platinum bracelet and clasp, it also features a diamond-set dial that is incredibly rare and bestows a strikingly minimalist overall aesthetic to the model. In the past almost 20 years only one other platinum 3900 has appeared at auction, that watch has a case number only one digit away from the present watch and was sold by Christie’s Geneva on 12th November 2007, lot 295.
Both publicly known examples of reference 3900P with diamond index dial were manufactured in 1984 and are therefore very early in the models’ 11-year production run between 1984 and 1995. Unusual for its mid-size 32 mm. diameter case and calibre E23 SC precision quartz movement, although the reference number starting with ‘3’ is for a man’s watch, this model is equally suitable for a lady.
The Patek Philippe Nautilus is perhaps the most desired model of all the company’s production wristwatches, indeed it is one of the ultimate luxury status symbols in the world. This rarest of reference 3900s represents a remarkable opportunity for the determined collector to possess a platinum Nautilus that is almost impossible to find.
