Lot Essay

This rediscovered drawing relates to Die Freundinnen (The Friends), a key late composition by Gustav Klimt. The figure—depicted in a subtly leaning, semi-seated pose, supported by her right arm—belongs to a group of studies exploring intertwined female nudes during the final years of the artist’s career. The pose, neither fully standing nor reclining, captures the fluid ambiguity characteristic of the figures in Die Freundinnen, underscoring Klimt’s late exploration of intimacy, rhythm, and corporeal balance.
