Fernand Léger produced numerous studies, drawings, gouaches, and paintings on the theme of builders, which fascinated him for many years. The present unique mosaic was executed after an eponymous lithograph by Léger, Le Constructeur, made for the cover of the 1951 Maison de la Pensée Française exhibition Fernand Léger: Les constructeurs et sculptures polychromes.
Léger appreciated the creative possibilities of other media and regularly worked with murals, stained glass and mosaics. The present work was created in mosaic after the original lithograph and was previously in the private collection of Georges Bauquier.
