The present work depicts Sargent's muse, Rosina Ferrara, with whom he became immediately entranced during his travels to Capri in 1878. Rosina features prominently in the artist's works from this year, including masterworks such as A Capriote (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston) and View of Capri (Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven).
