Lot Essay

The 'Coussin' Bamboo, which first debuted in the Louis Cartier Collection in 1973 after the maison's ownership changed, is still regarded as one of the most eye-catching and creative wristwatch designs from the 1970s.

This model was designed as a daring statement piece for Cartier's most avant-garde clientele, and it is nearly impossible to find on the market today. The design's unique bamboo-inspired case reflects a sophisticated Asian influence, reflecting the decade's fascination with sculptural form and exoticism. Two sizes of the model were made: the smaller reference 78110, such as the present timepiece, and the larger 'Jumbo' reference 78102. The 'Coussin' Bamboo is highly sought-after by collectors for its bold appearance as well as its extraordinary rarity. In fact, it is much harder to find at auction than even Cartier's renowned Crash.

Cartier has long been considered the pinnacle of luxury, drawing the most affluent customers from around the globe since the early 20th century. The brand is synonymous with classic elegance and unafraid creativity. The 'Coussin' Bamboo, with its sculptural case and distinctive presence, is a true design masterpiece, a testament to Cartier's unmatched artistry, and a treasured item for any admirer of the maison's vintage creations.
