Lot Essay

Released in 2017, the Lange 1 'Daymatic' is the conceptual opposite of the manually wound Lange 1. Its dial architecture is purposefully mirrored, maintaining the original model's harmonious proportions, typography, and overall aesthetic balance. Between five and six o'clock, there is a small but significant difference: the familiar 'Doppelfederhaus' (double barrel) designation on the hand-wound version is replaced with 'Wochentag-Automatik' (day of the week-automatic).

Turning the watch over, however, reveals the most significant difference. Powering the watch is the automatic caliber L021.1, which is renowned for being the first full-rotor movement created by A. Lange & Söhne. Lange's dedication to both technical excellence and artisanal finishing is evident in the rotor's platinum outer rim and solid gold central mass richly engraved in high relief to ensure optimal winding efficiency.

The Lange 1
The Lange 1, which debuted in 1994, was the first watch of A. Lange & Söhne's modern era and quickly became the symbol of the brand's renewed identity. Since then, its unique asymmetric dial layout, based on the concepts of balance and proportion, has grown to become one of the most recognizable designs in modern watchmaking. The patented oversized date display, which was inspired by the historic digital clock of Dresden's Semper Opera House, is a key component of this identity. The addition of a pusher at ten o'clock enhances everyday practicality by enabling instantaneous date adjustment.
