Lot Essay

In early 2024, Patek Philippe discontinued one of the most sought-after modern Nautilus models, reference 5980R. At Watches and Wonders 2024, the manufacture introduced its successor, reference 5980/60G-001, distinguished by its contemporary aesthetic and the addition of a denim-textured strap. The present model is particularly notable for its opaline blue-grey dial with horizontal embossing, complemented by applied white gold hour markers with luminescent coating, creating a refined yet distinctly modern interpretation of the Nautilus chronograph.

Importantly, it is the first time that a reference 5980/60G-001 is offered at international auction.

Reference 5980
First introduced in 2006 at the Basel Fair to mark the 30th anniversary of the iconic reference 3700, designed by Gérald Genta, reference 5980 brought a new level of functionality to the Nautilus line with the addition of a chronograph complication. The unique 'bull's-eye' subsidiary dial is a key part of its design, combining chronograph hours and minutes into one register.

Originally introduced with reference 5960, this innovative display arranges the chronograph hours in the inner portion of the dial and the minutes on the outer ring, offering both clarity and visual impact. Reference 5980 is powered by Patek Philippe’s in-house automatic chronograph calibre CH 28-520 C, exemplifying the manufacture’s technical expertise and commitment to integrated movement construction.
