Lot Essay

The present reference 1601 is distinguished by its highly unusual dial configuration, produced in very limited numbers and most likely intended for the Japanese market. Produced by Stern Frères (No. 7★R270), a well-known dial manufacturer closely linked to Rolex, it has an eye-catching design with grey sector accents underneath each hour mark and a black outer track. The watch has a distinct visual identity thanks to its subtle yet distinctive design, which makes it an especially attractive and uncommon example of the Datejust.

The Datejust, which was first released in 1945 to mark Rolex's 40th anniversary, has grown to be one of the most iconic and enduring timepieces ever made. Being the first wristwatch with an automatically changing date that advances instantly at midnight, it marked a significant technological advancement over previous designs where the date would change gradually over several hours.

The Datejust has been available in many different dial configurations, case sizes, metals, bezels, and bracelet options over the years, all while retaining its classic style and dependable functionality. It is still one of Rolex's most recognizable and adaptable models today, and collectors value it greatly for both its historical significance and its amazing diversity.
