Lot Essay

Until the launch of A. Lange & Söhne's 'Double Split', the French term 'rattrapante' described the ability of a split seconds chronograph's superposed seconds hand to 'catch up' with the main sweep seconds hand. Comparative time measurements were limited to 60 seconds and could not always be used in an appropriate way.

Lange's 'Double Split', the world's first flyback chronograph with a double rattrapante mechanism, opened up a new dimension in mechanical time measurement. Beyond the ordinary stopwatch functions of a conventional chronograph, it could also handle lap-time measurements, time comparisons, and fastest/slowest lap measurements. Its additional flyback minute counter makes it possible for the first time to use these rattrapante functions in a truly meaningful way, namely for events that last up to 30 minutes.

The present timepiece is particularly exceptional, being part of a strictly limited edition of just 10 pieces produced exclusively for the Singaporean retailer Sincere Watch Company. Consigned by a private collector with a longstanding passion for rare and mechanically complex A. Lange & Söhne wristwatches, this edition stands out from regular production models as it has a striking all-black dial with black subsidiary registers instead of the contrasting white subdials that are found on regular models. In 2004, for Sincere's 50th anniversary, another special edition was also produced with reference 404.036, made of platinum and with an all-black dial as well.

Powering the watch is the hand-wound caliber L001.1, featuring 465 hand-finished parts and beating at a frequency of 21'600 vibrations per hour. It offers a power reserve of 38 hours and proudly features A. Lange & Söhne’s first-ever in-house balance spring, showing the brand's testament to technical and artisanal mastery.
