Lot Essay

In 2021, Ulysse Nardin celebrated its 175th anniversary with the unveiling of an extraordinary horological object: the ‘UFO Blue’ table clock. The piece, which was created in a limited edition of 75 pieces and sold out when it was first released in April 2021, was intended to be both playful and extremely sophisticated. 'A wacky high-flying clockmaker’s object, a work of art, a piece of design and architecture, a toy, quite simply: the UFO, a table clock ready to welcome you on board for a new entertaining odyssey' is how the manufacturer described it, a fitting description for such an unusual and fascinating creation.

The brand unveiled the last iterations of the UFO table clock in 2023, offering retailer-only editions in three different colorways. Each version, ice blue for Bucherer, champagne for The Hour Glass, and green for Yoshida, such as the present example, was restricted to thirty pieces. While the color schemes differ, all versions share the same technical architecture.

The UFO, which weighs an impressive 7.2 kg and has three independently adjustable dials that display three different time zones, was developed in partnership with the renowned clockmaker L'Épée 1839. Its movement is powered by six spring barrels arranged in stacked pairs, delivering an exceptional one-year power reserve. A large 49 mm visible balance wheel regulates the movement, while a deadbeat seconds mechanism enhances precision.

The clock is housed in an eye-catching blown glass dome that is fixed to a spherical aluminum base with a bayonet system. The connecting cylinders, movement bridges, power reserve indicator, and ornamental pieces with Ulysse Nardin's recognizable anchor emblem are just a few of the green accents that complement the base's unique anodized finish in the present green edition. The end product is a daring combination of engineering, design, and artistry, an item that goes beyond conventional watchmaking to become a genuine kinetic sculpture.
