Lot Essay

With only around 500 pieces produced during a short production run, platinum examples of reference 5070 fitted with a blue dial are among the rarest and most desirable iterations of the model, making them particularly coveted by collectors. As Patek Philippe's first chronograph-only wristwatch in decades, the reference was introduced in 1998 and discontinued in 2010, marking a significant milestone for the brand. The model was first made available in yellow gold, then in white gold in 2001, pink gold in 2003, and platinum in 2008.

At its heart beats the calibre 27-70, based on a Nouvelle Lemania ébauche that was extensively reworked and finished to Patek Philippe’s exacting standards. The reference 5070 also stands out for its imposing case size, becoming the first regular-production watch from the manufacture to exceed 40 mm in diameter, a bold step at the time that combined strong wrist presence with the refined mechanics of traditional high watchmaking.
