Released in 2019, the present Baignoire Allongée was elevated to new heights through a series of thoughtful redesigns that reinterpret the original model with a contemporary edge. Featuring new Roman numerals, a silvered sandblasted dial, and striking architectural elements, the case adopts a bold three-tiered stepped construction. Cartier used a sharply defined geometric motif in place of a smooth oval to create a sculptural effect that resembles interlocking forms. The outcome is a composition that is visually striking and turns a traditional design into a contemporary statement piece.
Cartier Baignoire
Originally conceived in 1912 for a distinguished Russian client, the design that would later be named 'Baignoire', French for 'bathtub', has remained one of Cartier’s most enduring icons. It's interesting to note that the name refers to the shape of the private boxes in opulent opera houses that Cartier's affluent clientele frequented rather than the exact resemblance. Although the form was already in use, the now-familiar Baignoire was only manufactured in serial form starting in 1957 and given its official name in 1973.
