Lot Essay

The present timepiece is a prime example of Movado's sophisticated aesthetic coherence and technical proficiency. Strong harmony and subtle elegance are produced by the dial and bracelet's similar textures. The watch has a subtle yet distinctly opulent appearance thanks to the 11 diamond-set hour markers that punctuate the dial and the 48 diamonds that adorn the bezel.

The guilloché decoration flowing across the dial is subtly contrasted with the polished flanks that define the exquisitely proportioned cushion-shaped case. The dial's hobnail, or Clous de Paris, motif is characterized by the lack of space between its sharply faceted squares, giving it an especially rich and dense visual texture. A beautifully crafted white gold bracelet that is finished in a nearly identical pattern to the dial completes the overall look, creating a flawlessly cohesive and harmonious design.

Powering the watch is the Calibre 405, a movement produced for a brief five-year period between 1968 and 1972. It features a Triovis micrometer regulator for precise timekeeping and achieves its slim profile through the integration of an indirectly driven minute wheel and automatic winding gear. The Movado 405 offers automatic winding, a central sweep seconds hand, and both day and date displays, with practical setting functions allowing the day to be adjusted by advancing the time between 18:00 and 24:00, and the date via a quick-set mechanism.
