Lot Essay

A masterclass in chic understatement, this extremely stylish Duoplan wristwatch is a great find for any admirer of the rarest vintage Cartier models. For Cartier collectors, early examples that are unspoiled and of highly unusual design are beyond desirable.

This version of the ‘Duoplan Baguette’ featuring a small square dial within a horizontally rectangular case with oversized lugs must have been made in only a very small quantity as it is highly unusual among Cartier’s wristwatches. It exhibits a mellow vintage charm and displays a dignified and elegant presence. The case has a clear serial number on the back and houses the classic back-winding Duoplan movement which is in this instance signed by E. Gübelin. The white dial features Arabic numerals and the signature ‘Cartier France’. This horizontal duoplan is a sublime example of what can only be described as 'the genius of Cartier'.
