Lot Essay

The present timepiece is a spectacular variant of reference 3441, one of Patek Philippe’s most exclusive and seldom-seen models. The reference, which debuted in 1959, was made entirely of platinum and featured screw-back cases. It was distinguished by a bezel set with 40 diamonds totaling about 3.22 carats. Patek Philippe's first automatic calibre, 12-600, was installed in early models. The second series, such as the present timepiece, was fitted with the calibre 27-460, considered to be one of the company's best self-winding movements.

Reference 3441 was produced in incredibly small quantities, probably on a special-order basis, and each example had unique characteristics. There is only a handful of watches known to the market to date, and they vary in terms of dial designs and bracelet choices, such as leather straps and platinum brick-link bracelets.

Accompanying the watch is a heavy platinum brick-link bracelet by the renowned maker Jean-Pierre Ecoffey, identifiable by the 'JPE' stamp on the clasp. During the latter part of the 20th century, Ecoffey, who was renowned for his superb craftsmanship, provided Patek Philippe with high-quality bracelets and jewellery. The dial, which the Extract from the Archives confirms to be a 'bracelet pattern', blends in harmoniously with the bracelet to produce an eye-catching and unified look.
