Lot Essay

The present timepiece is consigned by an important private collector, reflecting a longstanding passion for the artistry and innovation of modern Patek Philippe timepieces.

Reference 5980
In 2006, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the legendary Gérald Genta-designed Nautilus reference 3700, the Patek Philippe Nautilus Reference 5980 made its debut at the Basel Fair. With its flyback chronograph and instantly recognizable 'bull's-eye' mono-counter, the reference is conceived as a true sports watch complication.

This inventive chronograph display, which was first seen on reference 5960, captivated collectors by displaying the minutes on the outer ring and the elapsed hours in the inner register, guaranteeing remarkable legibility. Patek Philippe's entirely in-house self-winding chronograph calibre 28-520 C is at the heart of the timepiece, demonstrating the manufacturer's technical prowess and solidifying the model's place as one of the most significant contemporary Nautilus references.
