Lot Essay

The present timepiece is offered from the family of its original owner, a discerning collector who, having retired from a successful career in the City of London in his early 30s during the mid-1970s, devoted his time to a life defined by passion and refinement. His interests ranged from raising a family to racing Porsche 911s and Jaguar E-Types, as well as acquiring some of the most iconic Rolex Daytona models, including examples fitted with the coveted 'Paul Newman' dial.

Highly sought-after, few timepieces generate as much excitement among collectors as a reference 6265 fitted with a 'Paul Newman' Panda dial. Defined by its striking monochromatic black-and-white palette, this configuration is widely regarded as one of the most aesthetically compelling ever produced for the Cosmograph Daytona, and represents one of the most desirable variants within vintage Rolex production.

The bi-colour 'Panda' Paul Newman reference 6265 occupies a particularly important position within the evolution of the Daytona, combining the signature dial layout with screw-down pushers and a steel bezel, features that would come to define later generations of the model. With its clean and balanced colour scheme, the dial lends the timepiece a refined and harmonious character, seamlessly blending sporty, masculine, and elegant elements. The subsidiary registers display the early stages of tropicalisation, developing a subtle brown patina that adds depth and character to the overall aesthetic. Further enhancing its appeal, the present example is fitted with a coveted Mark I bezel.

The present timepiece offers collectors an exciting opportunity to acquire a well-preserved and visually compelling example of one of the most iconic 'Paul Newman' Daytonas.

Reference 6265
Launched in 1969, the Rolex reference 6265 was unveiled alongside the reference 6263, and manufactured in steel, 18k and 14k gold. Equipped with the caliber 727 beating to 21,600 vibrations per hour, the chronographs were fitted with screw-down push buttons and guaranteed waterproof, which lead to the 'Oyster' script to be featured on their dials.
