Lot Essay

In the world of vintage collecting, chronographs with the renowned 'Paul Newman' dials are among the most sought-after timepieces. They are among the most sought-after prizes in the market for collectors of Rolex watches due to their exceptional rarity and unique appearance, which have elevated them to icon status.

A particular favorite among enthusiasts, the present chronograph is fitted with the highly sought-after black Paul Newman dial that contrasts beautifully with the white subsidiary registers. This striking 'reverse panda' configuration, combined with the watch’s well-preserved stainless steel case and crisp, well-defined proportions, makes the present example an exceptionally attractive and rare specimen of the reference.

Reference 6240
The Rolex Cosmograph reference 6240 was introduced in late 1965 as the brand’s first waterproof chronograph model. The introduction of screw-down chronograph pushers, which work in tandem with the screw-down crown to increase water resistance, was its most significant innovation. It is thought that only about 1'750 of these were made, and they were only produced in the latter part of the 1960s.

In many ways, Rolex used the reference 6240 as a platform for experimentation. The model enabled the company to improve the waterproof Oyster chronograph case design and test new dial configurations. The fully developed references 6263 and 6265, which would later define the subsequent generation of Daytona chronographs, were the result of the lessons learned during this time.
