Gabriel-Gaspard Grésly was a master of the trompe l’oeil genre. In this work, he skillfully renders a crumpled etching, the shadows cast by hanging objects, and a delicate feather. Grésly also draws attention to his own illusionistic techniques by including a painted fly at the center. The letter at lower right, inscribed 'A monsieur Chalus de / Verin place Vendome / a paris' may refer to the commission of this painting; as a Monsieur Geoffrey Chalut de Vérin and his wife Élisabeth Varanchan rented number 4 on the Place Vendome (the hôtel Heuzé de Vologer) in 1749, purchasing the property two years later.
