Lot Essay

We are grateful to Luc Serck for suggesting that this painting was produced in the workshop of Joachim Patinir (written communication; 26 March 2026). This panel was separated from its pendant at some point between 1937 (see Friedländer, 1972, loc. cit.), when Friedländer recorded both panels together with Adolph Loewi in Venice, and 1956, when only the present panel appeared at Sotheby's in London.
