J. P. Morgan Jr. (1867-1943) was a famous American banker and financier, as well as an avid art collector and a client of Fabergé. After the death of his father, J. P. Morgan Sr., in 1913, he inherited the family fortune and assumed control of J.P. Morgan & Co. In addition to his financial career, he made notable contributions to cultural institutions, particularly the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where he donated part of his father’s collection. J. P. Morgan Jr. also established the Pierpont Morgan Library as a public institution in his father’s memory. After his death in 1943, a series of major sales of more than a thousand objects from his collection were held at Parke-Bernet Galleries in January and March 1944, including the present lot.
