Fabergé was renowned for using locally sourced gemstones and hardstones for his creations. Chalcedony, prized for its wide range of colors, was often used for carved animal figures as well as for cabochon-cut gems in jewelry. This rare bonbonnière, however, is set with a rough blue chalcedony crystal, likely chosen for its striking natural form resembling the silhouette of a mountain range.
