Lot Essay

Christie's is honored to present the following Patek Philippe In-Line Perpetual Calendar wristwatch reference 5236P-001, property from the Mark Cho Collection. Offered full-set and in excellent overall condition, Mr. Cho has further enhanced this impressive timepiece with an exquisite solid platinum brick bracelet from his company, the Armoury, giving the watch a substantial, yet comfortable feel.

The reference 5236P-001
Launched in 2021 and produced only in platinum with a blue-black dial, the ‘In-Line’ type of calendar display was traditionally known (although with months placed first) as the "American Calendar” due to its popularity in the U.S. on pocket watches of the 1920s and 30s. This extremely elegant new reference 5236P is the first Patek Philippe perpetual calendar wristwatch ever to use this form of calendar display. The pleasingly symmetrical dial displays the day, date and month in a large single aperture at 12 o'clock for legibility, the moon phases and seconds placed in the lower half of the dial flanked by small circular apertures for the leap-year and day and night indications. In order to enable the creation of this model, the watchmakers at Patek Philippe developed a new self-winding movement, the caliber 31-260 PS QL with an additional in-line display module, for which three new patents were filed. The solid platinum case is water resistant to 30 meters and has an impressive yet not overpowering diameter of 41.3 mm.

The perpetual calendar is the complication for which Patek Philippe is perhaps best known, it has been a feature of the company’s wristwatches for over 80 years and is a feature of some of the greatest ever references. This exclusive new model with ‘In-Line’ display continues Patek Philippe’s innovatory approach and commitment to the development of the perpetual calendar complication. The clean lines and uncluttered simplicity of the supremely elegant case recall the legendary reference 3448 perpetual calendar to which the 5236P is undoubtedly a worthy descendent.

From Mr. Mark Cho
The 5236 is a worthy candidate for a "one watch collection." The in-line calendar display is a marvelous technical achievement, a miniaturization of the 725⁄4 pocket watch from the 1970's. I especially love the case, with its pointed lugs and broad, sloping bezel descended from the Patek 3448.

The custom bracelet, inspired by the classic brick bracelets of the 1930s, are made by bracelet craftsmen in Hong Kong. They are a joint project between international menswear brand, The Armoury, and Maia, a Hong Kong company specialized in making precious metal bracelets. This particular bracelet has been custom made for the 5236 in solid platinum. Its broad 21mm width is unusually wide for a precious metal bracelet and has a satisfying heft to it.
