Lot Essay

The RM 022 “Aerodyne” Dual Time Zone in red Quartz TPT® is among the rarest, most technically ambitious, and visually arresting creations ever produced by Richard Mille. Offered exclusively through Richard Mille boutiques in the Americas, the model was manufactured in an extraordinarily limited series of only 10 examples per color, available in red, white, or blue, with the present watch showcasing the most vibrant and instantly recognizable bright red configuration. Bold, lightweight, and unmistakably modern, the RM 022 perfectly encapsulates the manufacture’s philosophy of combining avant-garde materials with cutting-edge horology.

At the heart of the watch lies a highly sophisticated manual-winding tourbillon movement featuring dual time zone indication, function selector, power reserve display, and torque indicator. The latter measures the degree of mainspring tension to ensure optimal winding performance while minimizing mechanical wear, while the “W-H-N” selector indicates whether the crown is in winding, hand-setting, or neutral mode. These highly technical displays reinforce the RM 022’s character as a true instrument of precision engineering.

The designation “Aerodyne” derives from the remarkable aerospace-inspired architecture of the movement itself, which utilizes a highly advanced composite baseplate developed using technologies originally explored for supersonic aircraft construction. The movement combines a titanium exterior framework with honeycomb orthorhombic titanium aluminide and carbon nanofiber, resulting in exceptional rigidity, thermal stability, and torsional resistance. In the words of Richard Mille: “The use of this alloy in a honeycomb geometrical structure was originally the subject of research by NASA for application as the central core material for the ‘sandwiched’ wings of supersonic aircraft, where resistance to extremely high temperatures and torsion is paramount. Remarkable as it may seem, the preformed honeycomb patterns are actually microscopically laser-welded together to create a complete plate of the material, as casting methods for the honeycomb pattern do not deliver bonds with sufficient stress-resistance. The alloy in this honeycomb form offers unparalleled rigidity, a low thermal expansion coefficient and exceptional torsion-resistance. The actual shape of the baseplate itself as seen from the dial side resembles the trench-like V-shaped profile of a flying wing aircraft, where the wing tips are positioned higher than the central body of the aircraft itself. The winding barrel and tourbillon are both placed in the central depth of this aerodynamic structure, balancing on light and airy bridges with four arms on two sides. The watch represents the extraordinary union of all the aspects that comprise the Richard Mille philosophy of watchmaking – now and in the future.”

Further amplifying its dramatic presence is the striking red Quartz TPT® and titanium case construction. Developed specifically for Richard Mille, Quartz TPT® (Thin Ply Technology) is an ultra-lightweight and exceptionally durable material composed of hundreds of layers of silica fibers interspersed with NTPT carbon, then fused under intense heat and pressure. The resulting layered appearance gives the case its unmistakable visual texture while also providing extraordinary resistance to impacts, temperature variation, and magnetism. Combining radical materials science, aerospace engineering, and uncompromising haute horology, the RM 022 Aerodyne stands as one of the most innovative and collectible Richard Mille timepieces ever conceived.
