Once owned by the legendary artist and avid watch collector Andy Warhol, this Patek Philippe Calatrava embodies understated elegance and timeless sophistication. First offered in the jewelry and watches auction of “The Andy Warhol Collection” at Sotheby's in 1988, this distinguished reference 570 presents an exceptionally rare opportunity, further enhanced by its remarkable provenance.

The present example is made even more desirable by its “double-signed” dial, featuring the retailer signature of Hausmann & Co.. Founded in Rome in 1794, Hausmann & Co. continues to operate from the same premises in the city’s historic center and remains associated with some of the world’s most prestigious watch and clock manufacturers.

Andy Warhol (1928-1987)
Andy Warhol is one of the most recognizable figures of the 20th century and is perhaps even more celebrated today than during his lifetime. A leading figure of the art movement known as “Pop Art,” Warhol’s work combined artistic expression with the celebrity culture and advertising of the 1960s. Among his most iconic works are the silkscreen paintings Campbell's Soup Cans (1962), Marilyn Diptych (1962), and Reigning Queens (1985). Warhol’s The Factory in New York City became a celebrated gathering place for intellectuals, drag queens, Bohemian street figures, and Hollywood celebrities alike.

Surrounding himself with an eclectic circle of personalities known as the “Warhol superstars,” Warhol is also credited with coining the expression “15 minutes of fame.” He authored several books, including The Philosophy of Andy Warhol and Popism: The Warhol Sixties. An inveterate collector, Warhol amassed an enormous collection of objects and artworks of every kind, known among his friends simply as “Andy’s stuff.” Following his death, the collection was dispersed in a landmark 10-day auction held by Sotheby's in New York City between 23 April and 3 May 1988. A further sale dedicated to Warhol’s jewelry and watches, including the present Reference 570, was held on 4 December 1988.

Provenance:
Sotheby's December 1988: The Andy Warhol Collection, Lot 264
Christie's June 2021: Watches Online: The New York Edit, Lot 73
