Lot Essay

The first edition of volumes I and II of The Six Voyages was printed in Paris in 1676-77. The third part of this work appeared in 1679 when parts I and II were also reprinted. The author made these voyages to the East between 1643 and 1668. On his return from his last boyage he was recognised by Louis XIV, to whom he had sold millions of livres of diamonds and other jewels amassed during his travels, which were all commercial ventures. He was granted a patent of nobility for his contribution to the establishment of French trade in Asia -- he had indicated the only possible trade routes to the East and made it possible for others to follow him.
