Lot Essay

The first map relates to the Darien Expedition, a Scottish attempt to colonise the Panama isthmus between 1698-99 which failed disastrously owing to the climate and Spanish hostility. One letterpress note reads "Here ye Indians came down to us & were very kind in helping us to provision although in continual war with the Spaniards."
