Lot Essay

The present work highlights Ryland’s mastery in watercolour through his ability to simultaneously render subjects almost sculpturally whilst effusing them with a soft, calm light. The two sitters are shown taking a break from gathering daffodils thus indicating the arrival of spring – a subject matter much explored during this period due to its rich symbolism. The loose gowns worn by the sitters highlight Ryland’s interest in the Neo-Classicism of Alma-Tadema and Godward; while the subject and woodland setting indicate the influence of Pre-Raphaelitism.
