Lot Essay

The figure of Saint John the Evangelist, flanked by an eagle and holding a quill, is rendered with a greater degree of individuality than the other three evangelists. His outward gaze, reminiscent of a self-portrait, suggests an association between the painting’s unidentified artist and his namesake saint.
