Lot Essay

This composition loosely follows Joos van Cleve's The Holy Family (c. 1520; Manchester, The Currier Museum of Art) with several adaptations, including the substitution of a cloth, pincushions and a lemon in the foreground for a plate of fruit, and the addition of a tender interaction between Joseph and Christ.
