This exquisite little seascape, painted on the coast at Ravenglass, perfectly demonstrates Stott’s adherence to Whistler’s teachings on colour harmonies. It was singled out by the reviewer in The Athenæum of 1912 'as precious in colour as a Whistler, though carried further than Whistler would have dared to go in his later years' (Brown, op. cit., p. 318).
