Lot Essay

According to the inscription on the collar, this noble pointer was presumably the beloved pet of the Canzoni family. Dated to the penultimate year of Hackert’s life, the picture was painted whilst the artist was living in San Piero di Careggio, near Florence, where he settled from 1799 following the Revolution in Naples.
